Salute to Jets' goal-den girls

Moreton Bay United's Under 15 Girls - the club's leading hot spots this season.

Girls top Jets' goalscoring charts

MORETON Bay United's Under 15 Girls are in a league of their own – when it comes to scoring goals.

The team enters its final match of the season, at The Gap on Sunday (10.30am), as the only Moreton Bay United side to finish 2015 with more than 100 goals.

With a bit of luck they will also finish second in the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland  Under 14/15 Girls, behind Palm Beach but ahead of UQ, who are currently just two points adrift in third.

Add in a host of representative honours and it has been a remarkable season.

“Every player in this team deserves full credit,” said coach Phil Hughes, “many came up from the under 13s this year and they have trained hard and adapted to the competition.

“It was hard early on when we didn’t have the numbers, but over the season the players’ skills have improved and they have all done really well.”

Free-scoring Jets have two of their league’s top four goalscorers – leader Laini Freier with 37 and fourth-placed Indiah-Paige Riley on 22. Olivia Owen is in 12th with 14.

Jets have also hit double figures in three matches – 13-0 and 11-0 v Peninsula Power and 10-2 against SWQ Thunder.

Laini, Indiah and Sharn Freier were chosen for the Queensland Schools; Indiah won the Golden Boot and has joined Sharn and Laini Freier at Queensland high performance squad training.

Jets had a glimmer of hope of catching Palm Beach entering last weekend’s matches, but a 5-0 defeat of Peninsula Power was not enough. Palm Beach won 3-1 at Easts to take the title.

“It was a slight opening at the end of a long season,” said coach Phil, “but scoring 100 goals and having three players in the top 12 scorers was a great effort.

“Some of the players will go on to the Youth side and some more will come up, so we’re looking good for next season.”
