Matt and Finn to take on Brisbane Roar

MATT Capelo and Finn Beakhurst have been named in the 2016 PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland Under 23 Select squad to face Brisbane Roar.

The match, at QSAC, Nathan on Saturday September 24, will be part of the Roar’s pre-season program ahead of the Hyundai A-League season.

The 18-man NPL Queensland Select team will be coached by Grae Piddick, from Gold Coast City, who was assistant coach in the corresponding match last season.

Facing Brisbane Roar will not be an entirely new experience for midfielder Capelo and striker Beakhurst.

Capelo was in the Jets side which lost 8-1 to Roar in a pre-season game at Ballymore in July 2014, while Beakhurst has spent time this year training with the Roar.

“Although this has been a testing season for me, I feel I’m in a better position to face Brisbane Roar this time,” said Capelo.

“I’m looking forward to it this time. Last time I think I was a bit nervous and apprehensive about what I was facing.

“I remember it was a lot more intense than I was used to. The speed of the game, the way the ball was moved around, movement off the ball. Every aspect took things to the next level.”

Beakhurst, 17, a regular in the Jets’ starting line-up towards the end of this season, said the selection was a “big opportunity” for him.

“I’m just going to try and learn from the coaches and on the night get my name out there,” he said. “I’m pretty pleased at how the season has gone for me and this is a big opportunity.

“I had 10-weeks training with Roar Youth team and there was a difference – the quality of players and intensity. Now I’ve got chance to play against their senior side.”

The fixture marks the second year Roar have sought a match against Queensland’s stand-out prospects in the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues – which serves as Football Federation Australia’s talented player pathway.

The fixture is a joint initiative of Brisbane Roar and Football Queensland with the aim of providing opportunities for promising young players to display their wares against Queensland sole Hyundai A-League club.

Last year’s match proved an overwhelming success with PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland product Harrison Sawyer (Western Pride) soon joining Brisbane Roar Youth for the Foxtel National Youth League season and Christian Trovato (Redlands United) identified by Sydney FC Youth.
