Goal-den opportunity

Updated: Oct 22, 2020

Gary Ward, left, is welcomed by Jets' chairman Ben Parkin and women's head coach David Da Silva

Gary Ward said the chance to be Head Coach of Jets’ new women’s Under 23 squad next season was just “too good to pass by”.

It will be his third time with Jets and David Da Silva, our new Women’s Head Coach said he was “very excited to have Gary on board”.

However, Gary admitted it had been a tough decision to leave The Gap where he was coach of the NPL Women's side which reached the play-off semi-finals last season.

“I was very happy there, but I see this as an opportunity for myself,” he said, “had it not been for Dave I probably would have stayed where I was.

“This is a good chance to start something really positive on the north side and get back to where I started football in Brisbane.”

Gary and Dave are already working on the 2021 season and Expressions of Interest (EOI) are now open for players looking to join our Under 23 team next season. To register click here

Joining Moreton Bay United has also turned the clock back six years for Gary.

His first coaching job in Brisbane was with Jets before going to UQ, where he first met David Da Silva, then back to Jets and onto The Gap.

Gary has also worked with Football Queensland’s and was coach of the Queensland Under 14 Girls' team which won the national championship.

“My football philosophy and Dave’s align very well and I look forward to seeing how it goes,” he said, who also will have a supporting role with Jets senior women.

“It did take some time before deciding. The Gap is a great club, a really good community of families and young footballers who aspire to play at the highest level.

“It was a tough decision (to leave) but I felt this was too good to pass by.”

Women’s Head Coach David Da Silva said Gary was the first person he called after his vision for Moreton Bay United's was presented and accepted by the Board of Directors.

“I could think of no-one better to bring over," said Dave, "I have worked with Gary for a number of years. Our values are the same, as is our commitment to developing a program that is needed in the region.

“I believe this is a big opportunity and I am looking forward to it.”
